"Fire" is the only John Prine-influenced song that survived the cutting process. I remember listening to John Prine songs one day and he had one called "Long Monday" which stuck with me for some reason. So I came up with one called something like "The Longest Monday" and it was basically going to be about a man on the execution line and Monday was the day he was gonna get the chair. Verse 2 would be his wife's point of view. None of this matters because that's not what this song came to be. I forgot to record a voice memo of that version or write down any lyrics so all I remembered was "write a song about a guy in prison." So now it's just a guy in prison who wants to get out to see his significant other for just one night but also fears maybe they've found someone else now. Only song here without a guitar solo.
lyrics
Oh I miss your smile and I miss your true love ways
And I miss how you can make me forget my cares
Oh I'm counting down every night and day
My patience worn as thin as my hair
(chorus)
Oh won't you tell the warden to cut me a little break
Even hard luck men like me can feel heart ache
Don't need exonerated or let out on parole
I just want out for one night so I can see you and reignite
The fire in my soul
Well I don’t know if you even miss me still
I haven’t had a letter come since June
I’m writing this cause I got guts to spill
And so many tears my face is like a prune
(chorus)
Well I’ve kicked around the thought of breaking out
But it’s never come to be a foolproof plan
So I’ll just stay here where there ain’t any doubt
And I’ll never have to know if you’ve got another man
